The Ureteral Stent Toolkit is a multimodal perioperative approach to reducing opioids after ureteroscopy and stent placement. It consists of preoperative counseling and patient/nursing education, intraoperative anesthesia care plans, standardized discharge instructions for patients, and medication order-sets all designed to standardize non-opioid discharges after ureteroscopy.

The toolkit was designed and tested at the University of Vermont with published results showing that nearly 75% of patients can be safely discharged home without opioids after ureteroscopy. Compared to patients receiving opioids, patients receiving non-opioid therapies had similar postoperative adverse events such as emergency department visits with overall lower impact on outpatient resource utilization. The abstract demonstrating our results can be viewed here.
