Ureteral stents play an important part in the palliation of symptoms and treatment of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones). There is significant morbidity, however, associated with ureteral stenting: The vast majority of patients describe lower urinary tract symptoms including hematuria, dysuria, flank pain when urinating, and urinary frequency following stent placement until removal.

The Consortium for Ureteral Stent Pain (CUSP) was organized to bring together patients, urologists, research collaborators, industrial designers and industry partners to investigate better solutions for the management of ureteral stent symptoms.
